Wicks, Wax & Fragrance Faqs

We use wooden wicks-

Our wooden wicks are eco-friendly, clean-burning wicks made from FSC Certified Wood.  They have less soot production, longer burn time and a better scent throw than cotton wicks.  Many cotton wicks are dipped in paraffin wax which is toxic due to its known carcinogens.  Make sure if you still decide to burn a candle with a cotton wick, that it’s organic cotton and identifies as zinc, lead and paraffin free.

We use Coconut Wax-

Paraffin Wax- is the least expensive and most common wax on the market.  This wax is derived from petroleum, coal, or oil shale and is known to burn carcinogens into the air.

Beeswax- is a good option, but it is not fully sustainable or vegan and it does not hold or disperse fragrances as effectively as coconut wax.

Soy Wax- has sustainability concerns- although derived from a renewable resource, the majority of soybeans are grown using industrial agricultural practices that involve pesticides and monoculture farming, which is harmful to the environment. This also prevents this wax from being labeled as vegan or non-gmo.

Coconut Wax- is an all-natural renewable source that is biodegradable and free from harmful chemicals.  It has a cleaner burn than all other waxes, producing less soot along with a longer burn time and better scent throw. Coconut Wax is the ONLY wax that can be claimed as Vegan and is the most eco-friendly option available today.

Our Scents-

The scents we use are 100% free of parabens, phthalates, dyes and are cruelty freeWe adhere to the strict RIFM and IFRA standards regarding fragrance safety. They are non-toxic when used for their intended purposes in candle making. Our fragrance oil line is 100% phthalate-free. Our fragrance oils are free from carcinogens, toxins, and other hazardous chemicals commonly found in fragrance oils. Every single fragrance oil we offer is phthalate-free and made without ingredients found on California’s Proposition 65 list. We also go one step further by avoiding these 5 main hazard groups: ✖ Carcinogens: These are materials known or thought to cause cancer. ✖ Mutagens: Materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer. ✖ Reproductive toxins: Toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects. ✖ Organ toxins: These are toxins that can cause adverse effects or disease within specific bodily organs. ✖ Acute toxins: Toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion.

Candle Care-

• Always trim wick to 1/4" before each burn
• Place candle on a stable surface away from flammable items before burning
• Keep away from children and pets
• Keep away from drafts
• Keep wax free of debris
• Burn for 4 hours at a time to prolong the life of your candle and prevent tunneling
• Never leave lit candle unattended

We prioritize quality control and conduct various burn tests before production to select the best wick for each candle style. Additionally, we burn random candles from each batch to ensure consistency and prevent issues like tunneling.

Here are a few tips to help avoid tunneling:
1- First Burn: Make sure the initial burn lasts long enough to melt the wax evenly across the entire surface. This will help create a “memory ring” and prevent tunneling. Also, make sure to light the wick in the center of the wood, not the edges as this also helps create an even burn.

2- Burn Time: For each use, burn the candle for at least 2 hours (or until it reaches the edge of the vessel) to keep the wax pool even.

3- Avoid Drafts: Place the candle away from open windows, fans, or areas with drafts. Air movement can cause an uneven burn and lead to tunneling as the flame flickers and moves.

4- Allow the Candle to Cool Between Burns: Let the candle cool completely before relighting. This allows the wax to reset evenly, which helps maintain an even burn next time.
